While the offensive coordination and Bill Belichick himself are still determining who will be the quarterback (Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe) to start Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the 2023 version of the New England Patriots is close to entering history black of the franchise.
Belichick is in the worst year of his career as a head coach, having only two wins at this point in the campaign. The face that until not long ago represented that of an NFL emperor, has been disfigured into that of a demoralized and to a certain extent abandoned man.

Is this the worst Patriots team of all time?
Not yet, but they are getting closer.
The Patriots have lost consecutive games despite allowing 10 points in each game. They are the first NFL team to do so since the Pats in 1993. No team has lost three straight games allowing 10 points or fewer since the Chicago Cardinals in 1938 (four in a row).
This season, 2021 first-round draft pick Mac Jones was recalled in favor of backup Bailey Zappe. Zappe was a little better in the 10-7 loss to the New York Giants last week, but he also threw interceptions that clinched the loss in consecutive games.
But, as the ancient chroniclers say: the worst could be yet to come.

5: 1992
Record: 2-14
The Patriots had their third owner in five seasons. Four different starting quarterbacks were used: Hugh Millen; Scott Zolak Tom Hodson; and Jeff Carlson. Only Zolak would win a match by taking the balls under center. The offense did not score a rushing touchdown until Week 11.
4: 1970
Record: 2-12
The Boston Patriots began their first NFL season with a 27-14 victory at Harvard Stadium over the Miami Dolphins on September 20. The Patriots edged out the Colts for the first pick in the 1982 NFL draft in the season finale. In a game nicknamed – among other things – “The Toilet Bowl,” the Patriots lost 23-21 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and thus obtained the first of 28 first-round picks.
1: 1990
Record: 1-15
The 1990 Patriots are the only team in franchise history with just one win. They lost their final 14 games and were outscored 446-181, the NFL’s worst point differential of the 1990s.
