The Challenges and Rewards of Playing in Sweden’s “Allsvenskan” League: A Player’s Perspective

“Allsvenskan”, or the second strongest Swedish league, is characterized by speed and the very hard work of all players, Golovkov told Latvian Television’s “Sporta Studija”.

“It’s ar [hokejistu Miku] I talked to Indrashi and he told me: “Dude, I’m too old for this league.” “Everyone is very excited,” said Golovkov. [attīstīta] skating, stick technique. They all fight and skate well.”

At the same time, the Swedes are emotionally very restrained, and Golovkov admits that the Latvian national team had a completely different background. The Swedish league is not characterized by inflammatory slogans and shouting.

“Here it is – we give five, and – guys, go! But it’s not like they’re shouting anything there,” Golovkov explained. “I remember we played against [Rihardu] Mareni. It was pretty quiet during the warm-up, [un] then I hear Marenis screaming there. I myself immediately have such emotions… He is on the opposite team, he is there [kliedz] ooooh, shout out loud.”

Golovkov has made sure that it is not customary for Swedes to express everything they think in the team.

“We had a couple of meetings and I expressed what I was thinking. Then I realized that neither the general manager likes nor the coaches like that I expressed everything at once how I feel,” said Golovkov. “I think the other guys feel the same way, especially since we’ve lost several games now. I think I have nothing left to lose – I need to do something.”

The Esteshund club debuted in the “Allsvenskan” league last season. If last year they managed to avoid relegation, then this season the club is not so successful. The team is confidently in the last place, and the hockey players feel the pressure from all sides, especially the visiting players.

“For the legionnaires, I will say, it is the most difficult, because we now have an American in the team – the center. The goalkeeper was told that he will be [komandas] the third goalkeeper and let him look for a new team,” said Golovkov. “As far as I understand from the management, they are satisfied with me, but I don’t know what will happen next, because the legionnaires are always paid more than the Swedes, [bet] we need that result – goals.”

“Östersunds” has no shortage of goal-scoring moments in the game, but nothing falls in the goal for the whole team. Golovkov is going through it and admits that it is not easy.

Georg describes the Swedes as very fanatical hockey fans.

“If we won games recently, it would be crowded all the time – the stands would be full, but since we don’t win that often… [Tomēr] likewise people come,” said Golovkov. “People [šeit] really loves hockey – comes and supports. It’s nice. I really like the atmosphere.”

For the rest of his life, Georg will remember the historic hockey spring, when he earned a bronze medal in the world championship as part of the national team.

“I’ll be honest – the medal gave a lot, because first of all, I made my debut at the age of 28 [pasaules čempionātā],” admitted Golovkov. “It’s a satisfaction for me, even though I didn’t play all the matches. I only played two games – it’s not like I did much there. That kind of success factor for me because of all the failures in life that have happened in hockey. So if we believe in God or fate, which I do, I think it was such a gift to feel good about the work you put in and the fact that you never gave up. That’s why the medal is really very valuable to me.”
