Ter Stegen to undergo back surgery

“Ter Stegen will undergo surgery in the coming days to treat his lower back pain,” Barça wrote in a press release.

The Catalan club, currently 3rd in La Liga four points behind leader Real Madrid, has not given any indication of its unavailability at this stage. “The duration of his absence will depend on his evolution,” he said.

But Spanish media report a two-month unavailability for the German international, aged 31. “After intensive discussions with the club’s medical team and various experts, we chose to carry out a surgical intervention,” writes the guardian on his X account (ex-Twitter).

“This stop upsets me, but it is the right decision in order to return in the best conditions for my club and for the (German) national team,” he adds. The last match played by Ter Stegen dates back to November 12, a 2-1 victory against Alaves on behalf of the 13th day of La Liga.

Replaced in the Catalan cage by Inaki Pena, he has since missed two league matches, a Champions League match as well as two friendly matches for Germany as part of his preparation for Euro-2024. Ter Stegen has played 17 matches since the start of the season, conceding 15 goals and keeping a clean sheet eight times.
