Marc-André ter Stegen was recently missing from the national team with back problems. Now he even had to undergo surgery. The nature of the injury is kept secret. For the goalkeeper, the loss is a setback in the duel with Manuel Neuer.

Marc-André ter Stegen is apparently at risk of being out for weeks or months. The German national goalkeeper from FC Barcelona underwent back surgery at the end of this week. His club announced on Friday morning that the procedure had been successful. The reason for the operation was problems in the lower back area.

It is officially unclear how long Ter Stegen will be out for. The message simply states that ter Stegen is out and that his recovery will determine his return. Spanish media report that there is a risk of a compulsory break that could last six to eight weeks.

That would be very bitter for ter Stegen, because the home European Championship in Germany starts in just six months (June 14th to July 14th). The 31-year-old is currently number one in the German goal. Manuel Neuer from FC Bayern will be part of the national team again in the next international matches next March against France and the Netherlands.
