Marc-André ter Stegen was recently missing from the national team with back problems. Now he even had to undergo surgery. The nature of the injury is kept secret. For the goalkeeper, the loss is a setback in the duel with Manuel Neuer.

Marc-André ter Stegen is apparently at risk of being out for weeks or months. The German national goalkeeper from FC Barcelona underwent back surgery at the end of this week. His club announced on Friday morning that the procedure had been successful. The reason for the operation was problems in the lower back area.

It is officially unclear how long Ter Stegen will be out for. The message simply states that ter Stegen is out and that his recovery will determine his return. Spanish media report that there is a risk of a compulsory break that could last six to eight weeks.

That would be very bitter for ter Stegen, because the home European Championship in Germany starts in just six months (June 14th to July 14th). The 31-year-old is currently number one in the German goal. Manuel Neuer from FC Bayern will be part of the national team again in the next international matches next March against France and the Netherlands.

The 37-year-old Neuer recently discussed this with national coach Julian Nagelsmann. The two games are the last tests before the start of the European Championship preparation phase. Neuer and ter Stegen are in a duel for the position in goal.

This is what Nagelsmann, Völler and Lahm say about the European Championship draw

The German national team will face Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland at the home European Championships. “Of course we want to get to the next round,” said Rudi Völler after the draw. Julian Nagelsmann wants to “approach the matter humbly”.

Experts and fans are puzzling over what exactly Ter Stegen is suffering from. “In absolute secrecy” was the headline in the newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” on Friday night and reported that the goalkeeper had undergone back surgery in Strasbourg, France, on Thursday.

Problems with the lumbar spine

The operation was carried out with absolute discretion and was initially not made public at Ter Stegen’s express request, the newspaper said. At FC Barcelona there was recently talk of problems with the lumbar spine in Ter Stegen’s case.

Ter Stegen then wrote on the X platform that the decision had been made after “intensive discussions with the club’s medical team and various supporting experts”. “The interruption obviously annoys me,” said the professional. But it was “the right and safe decision to come back with the best conditions for my club and the national team.”

The goalkeeper had already missed the two test games against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2) because of his back problems. There he was replaced by Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt because Neuer, who had previously been injured for a long time, had missed the international games in consultation with Nagelsmann.
