He will not jump into the new season. Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová announced on social media right after midnight in the first minutes of the New Year that she and her coach and husband Jiří Vaňek are expecting a child in the summer.

“We wish you all the best for the new year, and at the same time we want to share great news with you. We are expecting a baby in the summer,” Kvitová wrote on Instagram alongside two photos with her 12-year-old son Vaňko, whom she married in July.

“While I will miss my annual trip to Australia and the sport I love, I look forward to spending some time at home preparing for this exciting next chapter in our lives,” she added alongside a photo of the baby booties.

Kvitova dominated Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, and in 2011 she also triumphed at the Tournament of Champions. In the world ranking, she reached the second place in her career. On the WTA circuit, the left-handed player from Fulnek won 31 singles titles, last year she dominated tournaments in Miami and Berlin. She ended the past season in fourteenth place in the world rankings.

In 2016, Kvitová won bronze at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she also helped to triumph in the Fed Cup six times. The native of Bílovka last appeared on the courts at the beginning of October, when she lost in the 2nd round to the Russian Lyudmila Samsonova at the tournament in Beijing. She then ended the season, and excused herself from participating in the Billie Jean King Cup final tournament in Seville in November.

Among the former Czech female tennis players, Barbora Strýcová or Andrea Sestini Hlaváčková are currently expecting their second offspring, and Lucie Šafářová, another recent FedCup winner, is already a double mother. Last year, she gave birth to a son, Kristýna Plíšková.

Among the world’s female players, the Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencicová, for example, currently has her career interrupted due to pregnancy. After the birth of a child, the former world No. 1 German Angelique Kerber and Japanese Naomi Osaka are returning this season.
