Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying and Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen Win Badminton World Tour Finals in China

The Olympic badminton champion, world number 1 Viktor Axelsen, and world number 4 Tai Tzu-ying, who defeated the Spanish Carolina Marín, won this Sunday the World Tour Finals, organized in China by the international federation of this sport .

The 29-year-old Dane, current world number 1, dominated the Chinese Shi Yuqi in two sets, 21-11 and 21-12, in Hangzhou (east), in a match completely dominated by Axelsen.

Reserved for the best-ranked players and couples, the World Tour Finals have a financial prize of 2.5 million dollars (2.3 million euros).

“I am very proud and very tired,” declared Axelsen, who spoke in fluent Chinese to the many followers he has in the Asian giant.

“My year has been extraordinary, it has also been marked by great disappointments, like the English Open or the World Cup at home,” he added.

In the women’s category, Taiwanese Tai Tzu-ying, 29, defeated Carolina Marín in three sets, Olympic champion in Rio 2016 and the only European in the world’s ‘Top 10’.

“I couldn’t train well before coming, my preparation and my performance have not been optimal,” declared Tai Tzu-ying after his victory.

“But, when I saw the excellent form of Carolina Marín and the semi-finalist Chen Yufei, I told myself that I had to grit my teeth and do my best to compete,” he added.
