A dark-faced Thomas Ceccon was the one who exposed himself on a social levelspeaking about his second disqualification in two days in the European Short Course Swimming Championships. In the 200 and 100 medley, the Venetian was sanctioned for technical gestures that did not comply with the regulations: in the first case we are talking about touching one hand at 125 meters and not two in the breaststroke turn; in the second of the dolphin kick in the backstroke turn.
The question we ask ourselves is the following: intransigent jury or athlete who pays little attention to the details mentioned? Taking into account the statements of some swimmers of the Italian team, there is a yardstick that leaves quite perplexing and certainly does not help in the development of one’s test, because the thought can go to a sanction without realistically understanding the reason.
“It seems strange to me that we have forgotten how to swim. I feel sorry for Thomas, he’s not stupid to make a mistake for the second time. And for me he didn’t make a mistake either of the two times“, declared the breaststroker Simone Cerasuolo. Nicolò Martinenghi echoed thiswho broadened the discussion to include the fact that this competition is being followed a yardstick that puts many athletes in difficulty: “It seems like we’ve forgotten how to swim overnight, there’s always a risk of disqualification. I don’t just speak for Thomas, but for everyone. This is the regulation, we can’t do anything about it“.
Little clarity therefore, in correspondence with an event in the 25 meter pool which recalls what happened in the 2021 Abu Dhabi World Cup in shortwhen it was Arianna Castiglioni to suffer series disqualifications. In that case, the videos revealed that there was an error in the execution of the swimmer’s gesture, which until then had however never been recognized as irregular.
Will it be the same for Ceccon too? The good thing is that medleys are not Thomas’ main specialty, unlike Castiglioni who was penalized for her breaststroke distances. What is certain is that this aura of uncertainty that hovers in Otopeni, especially in some races, is now a characteristic feature of the event.
