Sport is only possible with volunteer work! This is the title of the initiative of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, which the parents and athletes of the judo department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen are also taking to heart. For this reason, they have prepared two big surprises at the end of 2023.
An application was sent out to the Lichtblicke fundraising campaign for the entire judo department. For their 25th anniversary, they initiated the special campaign “The Big Thank You!” to support clubs, associations and neighborhood help. The fundraising campaign supports children, young people and families in North Rhine-Westphalia who are in need. Children and young people with refugee experiences or from socially disadvantaged or distressed families also train and fight with the TSV Bayer 04 judokas. So that these athletes can also actively participate in judo competitions, the department received 5,500 euros for this commitment. This is used to pay entry fees for tournaments or new judo suits. “We are really speechless,” says judo department head Michael Weyres. “Of course we can really put the money to good use. But also a big thank you to the parents who are so committed to the club, the department and the sport of judo!”
The second surprise was intended for coach Thomas Berg. He has been active in Leverkusen for almost four years and is also the district coach of the U15 age group in the Cologne district. The parents were surprised by his commitment during the #SportVolunteering campaign! Applied. The initiative of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia would like to put the spotlight on people who work tirelessly for their sports club. This year the big thank you and the surprise package went to coach Thomas Berg. This year, the TSV Bayer 04 Judokas U15 team achieved an excellent second place at the West German team championships.
