Surprise! Van der Poel returns a week earlier in the cross, immediately dueling with Pidcock

Mathieu van der Poel will not return in Mol on December 22, but will return to cross country a week earlier. The cyclo-cross world champion will make his appearance on Saturday, December 16, in the X2O Trophy cross of Herentals. The Dutchman will compete against Tom Pidcock, among others.

The organization of the X20 Trophy announced Van der Poel’s participation in Herentals through a press release. The all-rounder from Alpecin-Deceuninck immediately meets another all-rounder: Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers). The Herentals cross also counts as the start of the cross season for the Briton. Unlike Van der Poel, Pidcock will not participate in the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic, in early February. Van Aert also misses the global title fight.

Van der Poel’s duel with Van Aert will follow later

Van der Poel himself knew a little later via the social channel from his team to report that they are looking forward to his return to cross-country. ‘I trained well in Spain and I feel ready to start in Herentals. An extra hour of racing with the busy Christmas period in prospect can only have a positive outcome.’

A duel between Van der Poel and van Aert will take longer. This is scheduled for the Mol cross (December 22). The cross fans will especially look forward to the cross the next day in Antwerp. In that World Cup Cross, ‘The Big Three’ (so Van der Poel, Pidcock and Van Aert) are at the start. Van der Poel will compete fourteen times in total this cross season.
