Surprise! Through an op Twitter published video, the organization of the Giro d’Italia has announced the participation of superstar Tadej Pogacar. That is a real surprise, as many people assumed that the Slovenian top rider would again focus mainly on the Tour de France. The now 25-year-old phenomenon has never been to the start of the Giro before, so his participation is considered a debut.

Twice Pogacar and twice Jonas Vingegaard: over the last four years the Tour de France has been a prey for either the young super Slovenian or the stoic Dane. It was certainly in line with expectations that one of the two men would achieve a third overall victory this year. The last two editions in particular, won by Vingegaard, produced some great duels. ‘There was a fight for seconds. It was hard against hard every day’, we recently wrote in a column.

Zonneveld thinks it’s a shame that the big stars ‘are now avoiding each other’

The news that Pogacar is now going to the Tour of Italy comes as a surprise. Logically, various racing connoisseurs – protagonists from the cycling world – responded to the message on social media. Vingegaard’s program is also frequently examined. ‘It’s a bit of a shame about the match, Pogacar going to the Giro. Unless Vingegaard also changes his schedule, of course stated cycling journalist Thijs Zonneveld, for example. ‘After years in which the big stars visited each other again and again, they are now starting to avoid each other. I think it’s a shame.’

Journalist Thomas Sijtsma also responded to the news. “No Van der Poel against Van Aert at the Cyclo-cross World Championships, no Vingegaard against Pogacar in the Tour,” he points out Twitter. And speaking of Van Aert: the Jumbo-Visma star will also make his Giro debut in May.
