Sports Festival 2023, Luiss celebrates its student-athletes – Football

The Sports Festival signed by AS Luiss reaches its 23rd edition, and celebrates this milestone by celebrating the male and female athletes who have carried the colors of the university’s sports association high. On the Viale Romania campus, the university football teams (winner of the University Tournament of Rome), the men’s tennis team (promoted to Serie C) and the women’s volleyball team (promoted to Serie D) were awarded, as well as the basketball team , spearhead of the Luiss system, promoted to Serie A2 last season. “We have made an aspiration, that of being student-athletes, a reality – says Luigi Abete, president of AS Luiss – Our aspiration now is that the dual career results from the combination no longer of play and study, but of play and I work”. There are 340 student-athletes in the 18 AS Luiss teams, for 13 sports in total. From 1998 to today, more than 350 scholarships have benefited student-athletes. The university also boasts 60 Top Athletes (of which 19 with scholarships), i.e. athletes of Olympic and Paralympic interest who can enjoy a certain flexibility in exam sessions given their competitive commitments. The president of FIP, Gianni Petrucci, states that “the dual career undertaken by Luiss is something extraordinary that everyone should follow. I congratulate Luigi Abete, he gives something more to this University”. Among the Top Athletes awarded there are also the artistic swimming champion Lucrezia Ruggiero, winner of 2 golds at the World Championships in Fukuoka (“Sport begins and ends, which is why it is important to build something for your post-career career. Studying is the most important part of this project”, he states), and the Italian foil player Alice Volpi (“I’m 31 years old and I’m holding onto the opportunity to be a student of Political Science”). Edoardo Bove of Roma is also a Luiss student: “In the world of football there is the concept of the ignorant footballer, we are very behind from this point of view. Study and sport seem like two distant worlds, but they are very connected. I am grateful to Luiss because it prevents sport from being an obstacle to an individual’s education”.
