After her active career as a football player for the Dutch national team and Ajax, Sherida Spitse hopes to become a trainer in men’s football. “That seems like a challenge to me,” said the record international of the Dutch team (227 international matches) in NOS Studio Voetbal.

“It’s not that I don’t want to become a coach in women’s football, but I think it also suits me to work on the men’s side.”

The 33-year-old Spitse hopes to be able to do that at Ajax, the club with which she became champion last year and is making an impression in the Champions League this year. “Together with Rafael. Then he will also work for Ajax,” she joked about tablemate Rafael van der Vaart.

Wiegman

There has never been a female head coach in the men’s premier league. The name of the extremely successful Sarina Wiegman is mentioned every now and then, but the current England coach recently indicated that she is currently in a good position at the top of women’s football.

Wiegman became European champion twice as a coach: in 2017 with the Netherlands and in 2022 with England. She also reached the World Cup finals twice: in 2019 with the Netherlands and this year with England.

Spitse likes the idea of women coaching men’s teams. Just like it happens the other way around. “I think men and women can learn from each other. How we deal with football and the passion we have. I’m not saying the men don’t have a passion for football, but it’s a different experience. It’s a bit of a different world I sometimes think that for us it comes more from our hearts.”

“For men it is a lot about money. I am not saying that men do less for it, but it is perhaps a bit more pure for women.”

Van Hooijdonk: ‘Men’s football is a rooster’s world’

Pierre van Hooijdonk does not see a female coach for a men’s team happening anytime soon. “Men and women are equal, but the football world is not the same as society. Men’s football is a chicken world.”

According to Van Hooijdonk, in that rooster world it is about “credibility that you must have as a trainer in relation to your trainer group.” According to Van Hooijdonk, a woman has less of that within a male player group at the highest level.
