Shin Tae-yong’s Possible Naturalization as Indonesian Citizen: Requirements and Conditions

RIAU ONLINE – Shin Tae-yong has lived in Indonesia for four years since being appointed as national team coach at the end of 2019.

Since being trusted to coach the senior national team and age groups, great support from the public has poured in for the 53 year old coach from South Korea.

Shin Tae-yong, who has led the senior team and age group to international level, is considered satisfactory, even though he has not yet won a single title. In particular, the success of bringing the senior Indonesian National Team, U-23 National Team and U-20 National Team to the final round of the Asian Cup.

Due to his achievements, some time ago there was a rumor saying that Shin Tae-yong should be naturalized so he could become an Indonesian citizen (WNI).

Many netizens support the idea of naturalizing the former South Korean national team coach because of his achievements so far.

So, is it possible that Shin Tae-yong can be naturalized as an Indonesian citizen?

There are at least two societies that can enable Shin Tae-yong to obtain Indonesian citizenship or Indonesian citizen with the current situation.

First, Shin Tae-yong, who has been in Indonesia for quite a long time, only needs to stay another year or until early 2025 to become an Indonesian citizen.

This is based on article 9 of Law Number 12 of 2006, where an applicant can submit an application for citizenship with one of the conditions being that the applicant has lived in Indonesia for five consecutive years, as reported by Suara.comThursday, December 7 2023.

Until now, Shin Tae-yong has lived in Indonesia for four years. He only needed another year to stay in Indonesia.

If Shin Tae-yong cannot fulfill the first condition, he can still become an Indonesian citizen with the second condition in accordance with article 20 of Law Number 12 of 2006.

In Article 20 of Law Number 12 of 2006, it is stated that foreigners who have provided services to the country can be given citizenship by the President.

In other words, this second condition can make Shin Tae-yong an Indonesian citizen as long as he is able to bring the Indonesian National Team to success.

This achievement must be able to inspire members of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) and the President to want to make Shin Tae-yong an Indonesian citizen.

Apart from that, Shin Tae-yong must be willing to give up his South Korean citizenship status, considering that Indonesia does not adhere to the principle of dual citizenship.
