Lazio is back to winning in Serie A after more than a month (the last success was on 30 October against Fiorentina), narrowly defeating a Cagliari team that is increasingly in crisis. Last Tuesday’s victory over Celtic (with qualification for the Champions League round of 16) moved something in the hearts of the Biancocelesti, who appeared mentally more solid and more attentive in the defensive phase, except for a couple of scary moments at the end. Sarri’s team had not kept a clean sheet at home for three matches in a row since October 2022; now the ranking reads 20 points, as many as Atalanta, Fiorentina and Bologna, and one less than Roma (but all these rivals have one game less); to recover ground from fourth place it will be necessary to repeat today’s match and hope for some missteps from others. For its part, Cagliari remains stuck in third-to-last place.

On the 47th anniversary of the death of Tommaso Maestrelli, the coach of the first championship, the novelty on the pitch is the departure from the first minute of Gustav Isaksen, right wing in place of Felipe Anderson: the ownership of the Dane, among the best in the Champions League, can also be seen as a reprimand for the Brazilian, who has been intangible in recent times and is awaiting a contract renewal. Sarri opts for Rovella as director, while in attack the revitalized Immobile regains space at the center of the attack. The episode that definitively directs the match is the expulsion of Makoumbou in the 27th minute: the Sardinian midfielder drops Guendouzi when he throws him towards the net, the referee first warns him and then, at the VAR, thinks better of it, throwing him out.

The most obvious scoring opportunity at the start of the second half was a serpentine from Immobile (just out), but for large stretches the score remained unchanged: Lazio wasted as little energy as possible, Cagliari pressed but without determination. Only in full recovery did the islanders raise their heads, with the additions of Nandez and Pavoletti, the latter very dangerous with a header. But the reaction was too late, and at the final whistle the scoreboard read 1-0 for the home team. While the guests will return to the field on Monday 11th against Sassuolo, while for Lazio there is not a moment’s respite: on Tuesday 5th there are the round of 16 of the Italian Cup with Genoa, then on Sunday 9th they will go to Verona. Wednesday 13 December, the big match in Madrid against Atletico, to try to take first place in the Champions League group. The only negative note today was Luis Alberto’s muscle injury, replaced by Kamada in the second half.
