Scott Williams reached the round of 16 of the Darts World Cup via Martin Schindler. The Englishman then caused irritation with an interview on the Ally Pally stage. The reason was his disturbing praise for the German fans.

It was a close game that ended in drama for the German. Martin Schindler and his opponent Scott Williams went into overtime in their third round duel. In the end, the Englishman won the decisive seventh set 4-2. “This is just unbelievable. What a game. I’m so happy,” said number 52 on the Order of Merit after the marathon.

In his interview he then also addressed the German fans. More than 800 people created a good atmosphere in London’s Alexandra Palace and cheered on Schindler. It was a healthy patriotism on both sides that accompanied the country comparison between Germany and England. Even after their compatriots’ two defeats – after Schindler, Gabriel Clemens was also eliminated against an Englishman – they celebrated the match between Rob Cross (England) and Jeffrey de Graaf (Sweden): “Oh, how beautiful that is.”

All the more astonishing is the connection that Williams made on stage after his victory over the German in the TV interview: “I have never had the audience so much on my side. I know we won two world wars and a (football) World Cup. But the German fans here were really big,” he said.

Sometimes you don’t know exactly what intentions the extroverted 33-year-old has with his statements, but the praise was probably actually meant seriously, even in the packaging of the two lost world wars and the 1966 World Cup final: “Hats off to Martin, Hats off to the German fans.”

The two Germans remaining in the tournament will be in action on Thursday. Florian Hempel will face Englishman Stephen Bunting in the afternoon, Ricardo Pietreczko will play against World Cup favorite Luke Humphries in the evening. For the first time, four Germans made it to the third round of this World Cup. In previous years there had never been more than two. Curious: For Hempel and Pietreczko, the route to the round of 16 also leads via an Englishman.
