Sambo Professionals in Burkina Faso Seek Recognition and Growth

Little known locally, Sambo professionals in Burkina Faso no longer want their discipline to remain in the shadows. It is in this sense that the Burkinabè sports association of Sambo, which ardently wishes to establish itself as a federation next year, initiated a national course which brought together more than sixty athletes from all over the country on Saturday December 23, 2023.

Sambo is a combat sport of Russian origin little known in Burkina Faso sporting circles. This sport is a mixture of several sporting disciplines, namely judo, karate, boxing and traditional wrestling.

According to the president of the Burkinabè Sambo sports association, Bapla Palenfo, this sport has been practiced in Burkina Faso since 2020.

«So three years we have been doing our best to promote this very interesting and exciting sport. Thanks to the determination and self-sacrifice of the precursors of this discipline that we are, Sambo is increasingly known under our skies. In fact today, around a hundred people practice it in the four corners of the country.“, he said.

For Bapla Palenfo, their objective is to have a national federation to allow them to function better but above all to popularize this sport. “We do not currently have a national federation, of course, but we are in the process of organizing ourselves to achieve this objective in 2024. We already have 9 clubs in the country which are also represented here today. ‘today“, he said.

He stressed that the organization of this course bringing together athletes from all over the country offers them a framework to not only consult together but above all to share experiences. And also contribute to “better visibility and knowledge” of Sambo in Burkina Faso. “During this meeting, you will have clear explanations on the techniques, tactics and internal regulations of Sambo“, he told the athletes.

Although the discipline is little known in Burkina Faso, the country is already full of athletes who manage to establish themselves on a continental and international scale, in this case Israel Mano. The latter believes that in the five years to come, Sambo will have a say in the Burkinabè sporting world.

« I see the emergence of Sambo in Burkina Faso because we are already off to a good start with our various participations in African and world championships. Given the support of the people, I think that within 5 years Burkina Faso will be a Sambo nation“, he said.

Israel Mano also looked back on his last participation in the World Sambo Championship in Armenia. On his lack of results in this competition, he pointed out that he is used to fighting in the 98 kilo category but during this championship, he chose to fight in the 88 kilo category to increase his chances of winning. get a medal.
