Sailing: Christian Beck’s ‘Law Connect’ wins Sydney-Hobart – Other Sports

The Supermaxi ‘LawConnect’ won the prestigious Sydney-Hobart sailing race, held in stormy conditions, after a thrilling head-to-head with Andoo Comanche, who came second. After leading for much of the morning, ‘Law Connect’ took over from ‘Andoo Comanche’ in the last few hundred meters after a gripping duel.

Australian skipper Christian Beck’s ‘Law Connect’ beat compatriot John Winning’s ‘Andoo Comanche’ by just 51 seconds, one of the smallest gaps recorded in the race’s 78-year history. ‘Andoo Comanche’ was the reigning champion and big favorite this year, while ‘Law Connect’ had finished second in the last three editions.

Yesterday ‘Andoo Comanche’ still had an advantage of 9.6 nautical miles, the equivalent of about twenty minutes, over its main competitor 200 nautical miles (370 km) from arrival in the southern port of the Australian island of Tasmania, according to the official website of the race which began last Tuesday. In any case, the vessel that placed second remains the crossing record of 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds, set in 2017.

The weather got the better of the Hong Kong supermaxi SHK Scallywag, which started very well but was forced to abandon due to a broken mast.
