Roma-Milan (2-1) – Scattered considerations

Even in the women’s Serie A it is deep red…black: Milan falls at Tre Fontane against the most difficult Roma of the season.

It’s difficult to define an exciting race Rome-Milanwhose comparison in terms of entertainment with the contemporary match between Arsenal and Chelsea, clash at the top of the Women’s Super League, is a notable indicator of the distance between the world of English and Italian women’s football. A predictable scenario, even without taking into account the different technical and athletic levels of the two championships, but only considering the seasonal moment of the two teams: if on the one hand Roma had players squeezed by the national break and the need to manage the forces in sight of the Champions League match against PSG, on the other hand Milan is grappling with a deep and structural crisis, in a season that started badly and which does not seem at all close to getting better;

That the Roma of this match was not very brilliant, perhaps the least brilliant of the year, it is a fact well photographed by the disadvantage at half-time and with only 0.07 xG in the first half. But the fact that, despite this, he still won is indicative of his current excessive technical power. The blaze of an increasingly decisive Giugliano, and yet another impressive performance from a fully recovered Di Guglielmo were enough to catch Milan back, but they only partially hid a certain heaviness and lack of conviction in the Giallorossi’s play. Glionna’s statistics are emblematic in this sense, called to replace an important player like Viens on the right wing: 1 dribble attempted, 0 won;

Thanks to the episodic advantage thanks to the penalty converted by Aslan, the best thing Milan showed in the ninety minutes was that half hour of defense in the trenches to protect the result. The enormous density created close to the area, and Roma’s lack of cleanliness in their play, were an unsolvable worry for Spugna for a phase of the match. But, once the equalizer had been conceded, Davide Corti’s Milan showed no real signs of reaction, remaining on the riverbank to watch the game slip away. If it is true that Roma are a team of superior quality, the Rossonere leave, once again, the bad feeling of a team that has already long ago surrendered to the scenario of a season to forget.

The season of Emilie Haavi so far it says 2 goals and 3 assists, numbers that in no way reflect the Norwegian’s start to the season. While with Fiorentina, for example, he created 4 chances and served one assist, in the match against Milan he created 3 chances, shot 5 times on goal and set up the goals for Giugliano and Di Guglielmo. His accelerations are uncontrollable for the opposing defenses and the way in which he chooses, intelligently, to serve his teammates or attempt a personal solution, can only spark a more than legitimate question in us: What more should this player do to deserve a call up to the national team? Yes, because in the last Nations League matches, as Haavi herself underlined in a post, she was excluded from the new coach’s call-up list due to a technical choice. A rather strange decision, considering what we have seen between the Champions League and the championship.

If, as previously underlined, Milan gave some ideas during the first half, it is impossible not to express any considerations on the situation reflected in the standings. Sixth place, 9 points and, we repeat, no success in the last five games. If today Sassuolo were to manage to take points away from Fiorentina, Milan would be caught up or even overtaken, thus slipping into seventh position. The lack of a cohesive and hungry group combined with the absence of leadership could cost the Rossonere dearly, seeing the Champions League dream definitively fade away (assuming it is still an objective within reach). The questions therefore are: does the management intend to intervene in the January transfer window? Is Davide Corti an interim, temporary solution, or are there the foundations/intentions to build a new technical project?

These scattered considerations are created in collaboration with Ceretta, page on women’s football edited by Valentina Forlin.
