River Plate’s Claudio Echeverri Declares Intention to Leave, Eyes Barcelona

The bomb went off in Argentina. The great jewel of local football, Claudio ‘Diablito’ Echeverri, made it very clear, shortly after winning the Champions Trophy with River Plate, that he does not plan to renew his contract with Núñez’s team.

Echeverri, who has publicly explained that he would love to play for Barça, was clear to the media. “I’m not going to renew. I’m going to stay a year or six months and then see what happens.“, he declared after playing his first game as a starter in the team led by Martín Demichelis.

The young Argentine attacker, who will turn 18 on January 2, was the great sensation at the last U-17 World Cup and has been followed since then by the big European clubs. The player has an exit clause of 25 million euros that River Plate intended to increase with a renewal of his contract. Echeverri explained that his representative is in contact with the club, but that his intention is not to renew.

The question now being asked in Argentina is what decision River Plate will make with Echeverri. Keep the player and let him leave free when his contract ends on December 31, 2024 or sell him before.

Xavi Hernández, Barça coach, was full of praise a few weeks ago when he was asked about Barça’s interest in the young Argentine striker. “I know him. He has talent. He is a differential player. His arrival? That depends on the scouting area,” said the one from Terrassa.
