The technical heart of FC Volendam, consisting of technical manager Wim Jonk, technical director Jasper van Leeuwen and head of training Ruben Jongkind, is resigning. Trainer Matthias Kohler is also leaving, but will still be on the bench for the match against PEC Zwolle on Saturday.

The technical management of the club was closely related to the board led by chairman Jan Smit. That board was dismissed by the supervisory board on Thursday evening.

Earlier in the day, chairman of the supervisory board (SB) Jaap Veerman said that ‘Team Jonk’ did not have to leave. In response to the NOS, a spokesperson for FC Volendam said he was ‘taken aback’ by the statement. The supervisory board has not yet announced anything about the resignation of the technical heart.

‘Bucket overflowed’

“Our bucket overflowed after the press conference by Supervisory Board chairman Jaap Veerman,” the technical managers write in a statement, which is in the possession of De Telegraaf. “After this play full of contradictions, half-truths and full lies, we have no choice but to make this decision.”

“Board members Jan Smit and his fellow directors were dismissed by the supervisory board last night. Both were publicly thrown under the bus this morning by Jaap Veerman, as if they were irresponsible directors who do not supervise and implement financial ‘casino policy’.”

Jaap Veerman, chairman of the supervisory board of FC Volendam, used strong words today in his explanation of the dismissal of Jan Smit’s board.

Supervisory board chairman Veerman speaks about ‘war situation’ at FC Volendam

‘Team Jonk’ has its origins at Ajax, where Wim Jonk started to shape technical policy and especially youth training in the aftermath of the Cruijff revolution. In 2019, Jonk and his kindred spirits moved to Volendam at the invitation of chairman Jan Smit and celebrity Keje Molenaar.

Jonk started as head coach, was promoted to the Premier League with Volendam and managed to maintain himself well last year. This season, Jonk worked in the background as technical manager in close collaboration with chairman Smit. Kohler – also a member of Team Jonk – became head coach.

“We ourselves are accused of pursuing a policy that would endanger the continuity of Volendam,” the statement continues. “The ‘arguments’ that come along are of a sad level. Financial operational deficits are mentioned and magnified by Jaap Veerman, but huge transfer profits are concealed. The positive result at the bottom of the line is even denied.”

ANPVolendam coach Matthias Kohler consults with striker Robert Mühren.

“Budgets that have been approved by the Supervisory Board itself and the KNVB are presented as dangerous. Micky van de Ven’s deal is presented as ‘lucky’ and misinterpreted without any knowledge of the matter. The official bids for Mbuyamba are even denied. Jan Smit, a fantastic ambassador who led the club’s absolute prosperity, is being dismissed as a ‘bad chairman’. All founders on the board have now been liquidated by the Supervisory Board.”

Truth

According to the statement, Team Jonk has had many conversations within the Volendam community over the past week. “In the last week we have spoken with the municipal council, the board of the RKAV and the supporters. The most important ‘sections’ now know the truth and know what happened. We have done everything in our power, but our limit has now been achieved.”
