Referee Injured in NFL Game: Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints

Chilling injury to a referee in the NFL

The NFL regular season is in its final stretch and the franchises that will fight to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy are slowly beginning to take shape. During Sunday night, the Detroit Lions demonstrated their candidate profile with a 33-28 victory against the New Orleans Saints, but all the fans’ attention was taken away by an unusual situation that occurred in the middle of the second quarter: A member of the refereeing team had to be removed on a stretcher.

The visiting running back, Alvin Kamara, took the ball from Derek Carr and looked to face the left sideline. Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes used his shoulder to hit his opponent out of bounds to regain possession for his team. The blow was so powerful that Kamara could not stand, he fell to the ground and landed on the leg of one of the judges who was a few meters from the Caesars Superdome field.

When the cameras focused on the player getting up, it was clear to see that the referee’s leg was turned to the side, that he was in considerable pain, and the ambient microphones picked up the cries of suffering. The game was stopped while the injured party was treated; he was taken off the field on a stretcher and his left leg was immobilized. The moment he left the field with his hands on his face, the public applauded the official to encourage him.

According to local media NOLA.com, the injury ended up being milder than expected. “Nick Piazza, the officiating staff member who was injured during the Lions-Saints game, suffered a dislocated knee and is recovering at University Hospital. It is expected that he will not need surgery for recovery,” he explained. Several of the local team’s fans asked that the franchise help the referee financially until he can return to his role on the side of the field.

There are many times throughout an NFL season when officials, team personnel and others come into contact with players running out of bounds. As it is a contact sport, collisions occur spontaneously and spectators must always be alert to get out of the way if necessary. On this occasion, Nick could not react in time and ended up suffering the harsh consequences of colliding with an elite athlete like Alvin Kamara.
