RB Leipzig Coach Admits Fault in Narrow Win Over Decimated Dortmund

RB Leipzig kept things exciting for a long time against a decimated Dortmund and almost conceded the equalizer in the end. The Saxons didn’t seem completely fresh at times, which was also the coach’s fault, as Marco Rose himself said.

With a 3-2 win in Dortmund, RB Leipzig consolidated fourth place in the Champions League – and yet after the game there was uncertainty among the Saxons as to how their performance against an opponent who had been decimated for a long time would be assessed. “It’s really a tough number, also emotionally,” said Marco Rose on the “Sky” microphone. “On the one hand I’m happy about the victory, on the other hand I’m a bit annoyed.”

The coach was particularly dissatisfied with the final two phases in the first and second half. There his team conceded one goal each – and in the end they almost equalized. “At the end of the day, we can’t complain if Dortmund might score another goal,” admitted Rose.

“Not our best game”

“We lacked absolute control of the game, even though there were one more of us,” admitted Christoph Baumgartner. “All in all, it wasn’t our best game.” It was precisely the fact that BVB had repeatedly been given opportunities that bothered the scorer of the interim 2-1. “We have to have more control of the game so that Dortmund doesn’t push us in behind.” In his own game, the Austrian recognized that despite a few chances – including hitting the post himself – there was still room for improvement: “The phases in which we push them in the back have to be better, we have to work on that.”

Even if Baumgartner and his team lacked “a bit of gallantry”, the new signing from Hoffenheim “didn’t want to talk things down”, because in the end there was an important win away from home against a direct competitor. “If someone had told us before that it would work exactly like this, then we would have said, perfect, we’ll take it,” said Baumgartner.

“Probably” too intensive a training week – Rose didn’t have a good feeling during the final training

The fact that the bull’s engine sputtered from time to time was also due to the trainer – Rose said that himself. “I have to take it upon myself to some extent,” the 47-year-old said self-critically and then explained why he saw it that way. The training week was “probably” too intense – but the quality was right, even on Tuesday and Wednesday it was “outstanding”, “almost too good to be true”.

The intensity was reduced on Thursday and the final training was completed on Friday. Rose didn’t have a good feeling there: “Somehow I said to the boys yesterday after the final training session that I didn’t hope that Tuesday and Wednesday were our highlight, but that it would come tomorrow.” “A few things turned out to be true” when it came to the way the game was played. His team lacked “freshness” and “liveliness,” both qualities “that we know about ourselves, that we are used to and that we also need for our game.”

Nevertheless, like Baumgartner, Rose also put her finger in the wound: “The fact is that I can still expect my good boys to have more control of the game when they are in the majority.” At his old place of work, the coach would have wanted his team to “bring the game home more clearly.” That’s why there are “a few things we have to talk about after a win in Dortmund, which I’m very happy about.”
