Rasta Vechta Aiming for Success Against Rostock Seawolves

Eight wins in 13 games – Rasta Vechta’s previous record in the 1st Basketball Bundesliga is impressive. The newcomer is one of the positive surprises of the 23/24 season and is aiming for a successful end to the year on Saturday. Guests at the Rasta Dome are the Rostock Seawolves, who have picked up speed in the BBL after being eliminated from the Fiba Europe Cup. The game in the once again sold out hall starts at 6.30 p.m. Here you can find the live ticker from OM-Online.

The 1st quarter: Rasta had major problems with the Seawolves’ extremely aggressive defense in the first five minutes of the game. Very little was happening at the front (0/4 three-pointers and three turnovers). When the score was 2:9, Rasta coach Ty Harrelson called the first timeout. Things went a little better after that, Richmond Aririguzoh scored six points in a row to make it 8:9. But Rostock kept their nose in the lead until the end of the first quarter. After ten minutes Rasta was behind 13:16.

The last information before the game

6.20 p.m.: The two starting five formations are there: Rasta Vechta starts like last time in Weißenfels with Tommy Kuhse, Chavares Flanigan, Wesley Iwundu, Joschka Ferner and Johann Grünloh. Ex-Rasta guard Chris Carter, Eric Lockett, Matt Bradley, Chevez Goodwin and Derrick Alston start for the Seawolves. And: The enema kids from Children’s Heart Aid Vechta are also ready to go. Rasta’s goal is clear: After three narrow home defeats in a row against Bayern Munich (81:85), the Bamberg Baskets (87:88) and the Niners Chemnitz (80:81), there should be something to celebrate again.

6:10 p.m.: The second warm-up phase is underway. Time for a quick look at the games from Friday evening. The Würzburg Baskets have continued their climb, the 83:78 against EWE Baskets Oldenburg was the Franconians’ sixth win in a row. Meanwhile, champions Ulm showed no weakness in their 107:75 victory at Mitteldeutscher BC. For the MBC it was the seventh defeat in the eighth home game of the season. And the Telekom Baskets Bonn recovered well from the setback in Rostock, defeating the Bamberg Baskets 88:74.

6:00 p.m.: There’s still half an hour until the last game of the year. The first warm-up phase for the two teams has ended – and the almost 70 fans from Rostock have already taken their places in Block E. About the personnel: Tyler Nelson, who was missing from the win against Bonn due to flu, can get involved again with the Seawolves. Therefore: Both teams are complete. Good conditions for an entertaining evening in the Dome.

The Seawolves’ top scorers: Rostock’s best thrower is Derrick Alston Jr., who with 19.8 points per game is number two in the league behind Rasta’s Tommy Kuhse (20.5). Tyler Nelson (15.1), Chevez Goodwin (13.2) and Eric Lockett (10.1) also scored in double figures. Goodwin, meanwhile, is also one of the best rebounders in the league (7.5 per game/4th).

The Seawolves’ form: Rostock is currently in a good mood. The 98:92 on Boxing Day against Champions League winners Bonn was the third win in a row for the Baltic Sea townspeople. Since exiting the “Fiba Europe Cup” in mid-November – 4-2 wins in the first group phase were not enough to advance – Rostock has won four of five BBL games, including a 107:89 coup at champions Ulm.

This is what those responsible for Rasta say: “We are faced with a really big task,” says Rasta’s sports director Gerrit Kersten-Thiele before the duel with last year’s promoted team (9th place in the BBL debut season 22/23). And Rasta’s coach Ty Harrelson adds: “Rostock is playing very good basketball right now. They’re scoring a lot of points. It’s really hard to stop them because they have a lot of players in their offense who can score.”

The Rostock Offense: Rostock has 93.5 points per game – the best in the league. But that’s not all: 39.9 percent of three-pointers made mean second place behind Rasta (40.4). Hardly anyone can beat the Seawolves at the free throw line (78.9 percent, 2nd place). And the teamwork also works excellently with 21.1 assists (2nd place).

The duel in the cup: On September 23rd, Rasta Vechta and the Rostock Seawolves faced each other in the first competitive game of the 23/24 season. It was the first round match in the BBL Cup, which Rasta won 84:76. However, Kersten-Thiele does not derive any role as favorite from this. “That’s not the case,” he says.

The Rasta record against Rostock: It is the first duel in the first league. In the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, both teams only faced each other twice. In the 21/22 season, Rostock won twice – in Vechta with a score of 68:54 and at home with a score of 95:66.
