Ranking the Detroit Lions in the NFC and NFL: Where Do They Stack Up?

The Lions currently hold the No. 3 seed in the NFC, but where do you think they stack up against the rest of the competition?

Despite a couple of recent suspect performances against the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packersthe Detroit Lions still hold the No. 3 seed in the NFC, and are tied for the fourth-best record in the NFL. When it comes to the national media and their perception of the Lions, they are still considered to be a top-eight team in the league. That leads us to our Question of the Day…

Where would you currently rank the Lions in the NFC and NFL?

My answer:

Here is where I see the Lions stacking up against the rest of the competition at the moment:

Even though the Lions have been struggling, I still think they have proved that they belong in the upper echelon of the NFL. At the top, I think it’s pretty clear that the Eagles and Ravens are your two best teams. The Eagles are in the middle of a tough stretch of games and somehow keep managing to escape with a win no matter how tough the opponent is. That’s a well-oiled machine right there.

The Ravens hold the best record in the AFC (9-3) and have won six of their last seven games. Many of their wins have come in dominating fashion, with six of their nine wins having been won by at least a 10-point margin, and three by 25 or more points.

I think there is a case to be made to have the Chiefs lower on the list and maybe have the Lions above them considering they beat them in a head-to-head matchup, plus the Chiefs haven’t exactly been lights out either. But as of now, I feel that it’s unwise to bet against the defending champions, and I expect them to get even better as we inch closer to the playoffs.

The Cowboys are looking like the hottest team in the NFL right now, and have a point differential of +96 in just their last four wins alone. I wouldn’t consider myself a major believer in them quite yet, but it’s tough to ignore what they’re doing to inferior teams.

And lastly, I have the Dolphins barely edging out the Lions due to their explosive offense. Though they haven’t really beaten any of the top teams in the NFL, this is still a scary team with a ton of speed. I nearly put the Lions ahead of them, though.
