Rahm, Koke, Márquez… These are the highest paid Spanish athletes

The contract signed by the golfer Jon Rahm with the Saudi circuit LIV Golf at a rate of 550 million of euros until the end of 2029 reinforces the Basque as the highest paid Spanish athlete. It does so quite far from the rest in a classification that ‘Forbes’ makes public every year. Behind the current Ryder Cup champion is Immediatelywhich receives 16 million annually from Atlético y Marc Márquezwhose emoluments in Honda (he just signed for Gressini) amounted to 15 million annually.

Saúl, Asensio and Gabri Veiga

Despite the multi-sport nature of the ‘top 3’, Soccer players make up 90% of the highest paid athletes. The limit to be among the 100 chosen by ‘Forbes’ is two million euros per year. In fourth place on the list is another Atlético de Madrid player, Saul (15 million), while in fifth place appears Marco Asensio (14.5), Spanish international for PSG. follows them Gabri Veiga (13), the pearl of Celta who signed last summer for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

In seventh position appears Rodri Hernández, capital player of Manchester City of Pep Guardiola (7 million euros) who scored the goal that gave the ‘sky blue’ team their first Champions League title. In eighth place among the highest paid athletes is Carlos SainzSpanish F1 driver at Ferrari (12 million), while Fernando Alonso signed a contract with Aston Martin that is far from the ‘top 10’: he earns 5 million annually which places him in 45th position in the classification.

Marcos Llorentefrom Atlético de Madrid (12 million) and Iñaki Williams (11.40), from Athletic, complete the honorary ten of the highest paid athletes. There are no footballers from Real Madrid or Barcelona in this high team. The first two white players on the list are Dani Ceballos y Dani Carvajal, both with a salary of 10.42 million. While the Spanish member of FC Barcelona with a larger payroll is Ferran Torres (10 million).

Carlos Alcaraz, in 21st place

The Spanish tennis player appears in 21st place of the 100 highest-paid Spanish athletes of ‘Forbes’ Carlos Alcaraz (9.31 million) and in 34th position is another golfer, Sergio Garcia, who was also seduced by the Saudi LIV circuit, with an annual salary of 6.75 million euros. There are other national golfers who are part of this circuit that has broken the rules of the game with respect to the American PGA: Eugenio López-Chacarra (the 97th highest paid, with 2.84 million) and David Puig.

The highest paid basketball player was Ricky Rubioa player for the Cleveland Cavaliers (36th on the ‘Forbes’ list with 6.14 million euros annually) and for the Spanish team who on August 5 decided to stop his professional activity to take care of his mental health. Juancho Hernángomezin the ranks of Panathinaikos, earns 4.5 million euros annually and his brother Willy Hernángomez (53), from FC Barcelona has a payroll of 4.2 million.

These figures refer to pure salaries. Advertising contracts are not taken into account, essential in figures such as those of Rafael Nadal, who, logically, after a season practically in dry dock does not appear among the 100 highest paid Spanish athletes of the moment. Only the money produced on a field, track or stadium is taken into account.

No Spanish in the ‘top 100’

Furthermore, it is worth taking into account the peculiarity of certain sports such as tennis or golf, where profits depend on the results achieved in each tournament. None of the assumptions leads to a Spanish woman being among the 100 highest-paid athletes.

Alexia Putellas, twice Ballon d’Or winner, is the highest-paid national athlete, with 1.05 million euros annually. The Barça captain, whose contract ends in June 2024, is immersed in negotiations to determine what she will do in her future.

Behind Alexia is Carlotta Ciganda (910,000 euros), Spanish golfer who led the European team in the Solheim Cup. The next three places in the annual ranking are for three tennis players, the most equal sport in terms of rewards: Sarah Smiles (700.000 euros), Cristina Bucsa (650.000) y Paula Badosa (630.000).
