Rafael Uribe Receiving First Dan Diploma at 2023 Shiai National Superior Championship

SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Judo Federation (Fedojudo) presented the First Dan diploma to engineer Rafael Uribe at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Shiai National Superior Championship, kata and judo team at the National House of that sport in the Olympic Center.

Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), began as an athlete in judo, a sport in which he also served as director of the Mirador Judo club and in the Judo Association of the National District.

Judo trained me and I was able to prepare myself as a professional through the sport. I urge you all to continue playing sports and studying for a better future,” he told the young judokas.

The president of Fedojudo, Mr. Gilberto García, said that Uribe was an integrated, university athlete dedicated to judo.

“We are seeing the young talents who are the athletes who will represent the country in the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026,” García highlighted.

In the opening meeting, engineer Garibaldy Bautista, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), highlighted the pool of young talents that the judo federation has been forming.

“Salute Fedojudo for bringing together the talents that will replace the current athletes. “I invite athletes to develop the skills so that they can be the champions of tomorrow,” added the head of the COD, who also highlighted the distinction to Rafael Uribe.

The Vice Minister of Sports, Franklin De la Mota, celebrated the Fedojudo initiative, after the recognition of Uribe, while inviting the athletes to enjoy the competitions and give their best.

Also present at the opening event were Luisa Martínez and Rudy Contreras, directors of Fedojudo, as well as José Luis Ramírez, president of the Dominican Karate Federation.

Lwilli Santana greeted the judges, while Ariel Lorenzo, from the National District, gave the oath to the athletes.

A total of 161 athletes from 18 judo associations participated in the contest with the intention of obtaining a place to integrate the preselections in the different weights.

Uribe’s time in judo

As a judo athlete, Rafael Uribe was adult champion of the National District, as well as bronze medalist in the National Championships in Barahona, youth team of the National District in the 1992 San Juan National Games.

The sports leader was also a member of the UNPHU judo team, where he received recognition as a meritorious athlete and where he graduated in Civil Engineering through a scholarship as a judo athlete.
