PSSI’s response to Thom Haye’s desire to play for the Indonesian national team

KOMPAS.com – Deputy General Chair of PSSI, Zainudin Amali, responded to Thom Haye’s desire to defend the Indonesian national team.

Thom Haye, who plays for Dutch club SC Heerenveen, has expressed his desire to be part of the Indonesian national team.

According to Thom Haye, the opportunity to become a player for the Indonesian national team is still very open.

“Yes, it would be nice, I have confidence that it will still happen,” Thom Haye said in an interview with ESPN NL.

“Because, I was aware of it and now I’m basically not part of it all,” he said.

Zainudin Amali then opened his voice regarding Thom Haye’s desire to change Indonesian citizenship.

The former Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports said that PSSI always accepts the wishes of footballers who have Indonesian blood to play in the Garuda squad.

“So, anyone who has Indonesian blood is a FIFA requirement (open to the possibility),” said Amali on Thursday (14/12/2023), quoted from Between News.

“We don’t want an incident like not having Indonesian blood and then naturalizing waiting for a five year process,” he added.

“So, we comply with FIFA and government regulations, not carelessly,” said the 61 year old man.

Zainudin Amali explained that the naturalization process is actually quite strict because there is a policy from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora).

The figure who was born in Gorontalo said that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has regulations for the naturalization of footballers if they receive advice from the Indonesian national team coach.

“We process what is possible and now the process is quite strict, not like before,” said Zainudin Amali.

“In the past, clubs could carry out the naturalization process, but now since I am the Minister of Youth and Sports, there must be a need from the (national team) coach conveyed to the federation and then we process it,” he said.

“If there is a club that wants to (naturalize), we don’t want it. “Thank God, this policy was continued by Minister of Youth and Sports Dito.”
