PSG: “worst” second in the group, only two victories… The figures for a complicated group stage

The essentials are assured. PSG left the group of death in the Champions League by seeking a draw in Dortmund this Wednesday evening (1-1) to finish second in Group F. The capital club qualified for the twelfth time in following in the round of 16 of the Champions League, only Real Madrid (21) and Bayern Munich (16) are currently doing better. But it was hard… Demonstration in figures.

The capital club is quite simply the worst runner-up in this season’s Champions League group, tied with Copenhagen, second behind Bayern Munich and ahead of Galatasaray and Manchester United. This is the first time, under the QSI era, that PSG reached the round of 16 with such a small total of points. And if it is anecdotal and necessarily not comparable because the adversity was not the same, Lens finished 3rd in its group with… 8 points.

In 2018-2019, they did worse by conceding 9 goals in the pool against Liverpool, Naples and Belgrade. In 2021-2022, the capital club also conceded 8 goals against City, Leipzig and Bruges.

This is only the third time in the QSI era that PSG needed to seek qualification on the last day. During the first two times, PSG largely won to finish 1st in its group (4-1 victory against Belgrade in December 2018, 5-1 victory against Basaksehir in December 2020).
