Press about EM: “Germany, finally! The stroke of luck in Group A”

The European Championship preliminary round groups have been determined. The draw triggers different reactions – in Spain the press is even talking about a group of death for their national team. In Switzerland they are looking forward to Germany as their opponents, and England already believe they are on their way to the final. The international press reviews of the draw.

Switzerland

„Blick“: “Germany, finally! The stroke of luck in Group A with the hosts gives Murat Yakin a lot of confidence. The Germans themselves are looking forward to Captain Granit Xhaka with mixed feelings.”

“Tages-Anzeiger”: “Finally Germany! The group is particularly attractive because the Swiss will finally meet their big neighbor in a final round. The last time that happened was at the 1966 World Cup. When Xherdan Shaqiri was recently asked about the dream draw, he didn’t have to think twice, he said: Germany. Even though Switzerland has extremely weak qualifications, it is still the second strongest force in this group based on its qualities.”

“Not the feared Hammer group. But still a very difficult group.”

The Volksparkstadion in Hamburg will at least experience interesting games in the preliminary round of the 2024 European Football Championship. This was the result of the draw on Saturday in the Elbphilharmonie in the Hanseatic city. WELT sports reporter Julien Wolff analyzes the upcoming challenges for the national team.

“NZZ”: “After the European Championship draw: Murat Yakin is looking forward to Germany. After the disappointing qualification, the coach has to dispel his doubts.”

Scotland

„Glasgow Times“: “Playing against hosts Germany in front of sold-out stands in the Allianz Arena in Munich with its capacity of 70,000 in the opening game (…) will probably be the toughest test the national team has ever faced.”

„Scotsman“: “The eyes of Europe will be on them, 25 years after the world watched Craig Brown’s side take on defending champions Brazil in the opening game of the World Cup in France. The Scots narrowly lost. “Clarke expressed hope that his team can surprise Germany at the Allianz Arena.”

Hungary

“origo.hu”: “Hungary’s selection fell into a rock-hard group at the European Football Championship.”

“National sport”: “Progressing does not seem to be an impossible mission and the opening game will be between the Scots and the Germans, who Marco Rossi’s side will face in the second round. Our captain doesn’t expect easy games.”

“People’s word”: “Fate has been kind to us because our country will meet Germany again after 2021 and will also play against two teams, namely Scotland and Switzerland.”

England

„Mail on Sunday“: “After the comfortable draw, the signs are good for England in their quest for immortality. Gareth Southgate’s players are at the peak of their abilities. Not getting through the preliminary round in this group would be a catastrophe.”

„The Sun“: “Gareth Southgate’s team will travel to the European Championships as one of the favorites along with France and Portugal. The Three Lions’ first game will be played in Gelsenkirchen against Serbia. The Arena AufSchalke is a cursed stadium for England because it was the place where Sven-Göran Eriksson’s team were ejected against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.”

„Sunday Express“: “England have been drawn into a favorable group for Euro 2024 alongside Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia. The Three Lions have avoided the biggest pitfalls in pots two, three and four.”

Italy

“Corriere dello Sport”: “Tough draw for Italy at the 2024 European Championships. The Azzurri picked Spain, Croatia and Albania from the ballot box in Hamburg and were inserted into Group B. A complicated preliminary round for the Azzurri.”

“Gazzetta dello Sport”: “Not an easy group at the European Championships. But we have one of the best coaches, some optimal players, other strengths and our football history. Everything is there to come first or second.”

„Tuttosport“: “Iron Group for Italy with Spain, Croatia and Albania.”

“The Republic”: “Not a good urn for the Azzurri (…) Spain is not the strongest series head, but it is a national team that is difficult for us to digest, while Croatia, who returned home from two World Cups with a podium finish, were certainly the team that one would have preferred to avoid.”

Spain

“The world”: “It will be a thorny road (…) Spain will have no respite at the European Championships. The brilliant qualification as group winners did not bring Luis de la Fuente’s team a good fate. In Group B, the most difficult of all, they face Croatia, Italy and Albania.”

“AS”, “Marca” and “Sport” in unison: “Spain is going into the group of death.”

“Sports world”: “Very tough lot for Spain. The Selection has had no luck and will face Croatia, Italy and Albania in Group B, probably the most difficult of all.”

“Simply indescribable” – Germany’s world champion in ecstasy

The German U17 made history with the World Cup fairytale in Indonesia. After the triumph against France, the mood among the newly crowned world champions around final scorer Paris Brunner is exuberant.

“The country”: “Spain, Italy and Croatia will bring the European Championships to a boil (…) No group is more difficult than ours. Perhaps only Group D with France, the Netherlands and Austria is comparable.”

“The vanguard”: “The worst bad luck”

France

„The Team“: “Group D is largely within the reach of Les Bleus, but still offers interesting opponents (…) But since France can qualify from the four best third-placed teams, they need not fear a misstep at this stage of the competition.”

“Le Figaro”: “Complex, but far from insurmountable.”

“The world”: “This draw is far from easy, but it seems affordable for a French national team in top form and strengthened after failure in the final of the 2022 World Cup.”

Netherlands

„AD“: “Oranje can sink their teeth into the European Championships: again against France, also against Austria.”

“The Telegraph”: “Oranje will face France again at the European Championships, who had already been a pest during the qualification: 0:4, 1:2. Austria and a not yet known opponent are also opponents in the group phase.”

Austria

“The press”: “France, Netherlands and Poland/Wales/Finland: an easy draw looks different at a European Championship finals. But Austria has the advantage of not having to burden itself with being the favorite. The forecast is to play freely, Ralf Rangnick is looking for the recipe.”

“Kronen Zeitung”: “Hammerless for Austria’s national football team at the 2024 European Championship! Alaba and Co. will face France, the Netherlands and the playoff winners A – Wales, Finland, Poland or Estonia – in the group phase. That could have been easier.”
