The return round for coach Fabio Di Bella’s team begins at the “PalaTiziano” in Rome: facing the rossoblu is Luiss Roma, a team of university students from the College of the same name who in the first leg, on their absolute debut in A2, he had beaten Novi by more than one point in Casale. After the good start to the season, the Romans have racked up 9 defeats in a row and find themselves at 4 points, with one victory less than the Monferrato team: this makes the away match practically a direct clash to avoid the most dangerous group of the scheduled phase. The first half of the match is balanced: Miska and the new signing Sabin respond to Kelly’s show. The inertia after 20′ seems to reward Latina, who closes the first half on +9. In the second half Novipiù fights and gets back to a draw. Sabin sealed Luiss’s attack: the Romans cynically managed to prevail in the lottery of shots from the foul line at the end of the match. It ends 79-74, with Roma reaching Novipiù in the standings with the advantage of having won both matches played.

Rossoblu complete for the trip to the capital, with the distinct presence of Seraphin Kadjividi, new Novipiù player (and with Poom and Pianegonda following the match from the sidelines). At the tap-off, Calzavara, Kelly, Pepper, Fabi and Martinoni line up on the parquet. We start with a triple from Kelly, in a decidedly slow start to the match. Pepper’s three-pointer is answered by Miska for 6-all in the 4th minute. Sabin, a shooting guard who arrived at Luiss from Cento this week, is on the scoresheet. Cucci’s dunk, rather ignored by the rossoblu defense, convinces the Monferrato Basket technical staff to stop the match (13-9 partial in the 6th minute). Novipiù finds points only from long range, challenged to shoot from behind the arc by the Luiss defense. Kelly is very inspired: with the second slalom basket in the area he reaches 13 personal points before the end of the first quarter. The first half ends 22-18. Roma are unlucky with shots taken after building space in attack. Sabin and Murri make the first significant move for the home team, who are ahead 30-23 in the 13th minute: Calzavara closes the gap with a three-pointer from the corner. Novipiù finds the free man under the basket with good continuity thanks to careful circulation of the ball. Pasqualin scores the +10 (44-34 at 18′). Coach Paccariè leaves nothing to chance and calls a timeout to draw the last possessions before the break: however, no one finds the basket and so we go to the locker rooms at 44-35 for Luiss.

At the restart of the match there was a lot of dust for both teams: it was Sabin who broke the deadlock by finding the +10 for Luiss with a bomb (50-40 in the 23rd minute). Coach Paccariè has studied the match well and he manages to get around the rossoblu defense with good continuity. The ballistic challenge between Sabin and Kelly brings the score to 57-47 in the 27th minute. The match starts, with many valuable actions put together by both teams: the triple Kelly brings the match back to a draw (59-59 at 28′), Savioni is not there and from the paint gives the university team a new temporary advantage. We go into the last mini-time at 61-59 for the Romans. The last quarter begins with the most fouled basket – and unconverted free throw – by Jovovic. After a rather anonymous match, the big man in the Luiss jersey is the protagonist in a few minutes on both fronts, with baskets, assists and tight defenses: Murri with his triple keeps the 9-0 run open for 68-59 at minute 33 Fantoma interrupts the long fast of Novipiù, who regains points after almost 5′ of abstinence. Sabin knows how to make himself loved by the capital’s public: in the 34th minute of the debut match he had a personal haul of 26 points, scored with great ease. 4′ from the siren Casale has to recover 14 points (76-62 score). Calzavara is forced to abandon the match after committing his fifth personal foul. Pepper and Fabi try to bring Novipiù back under (76-67) when there is only one lap of the clock left until the final siren: Fabi scores a triple, Sabin escapes the mark and gains precious seconds on the rossoblu’s attempt to commit a systematic foul. Kelly finds a foul on the shot from behind the 6.75 arc: with 18” still to play the distance between the two teams is 5 points. Three consecutive rebounds in attack for the Monferrato team: on the last one Fabi scores a triple, but the referees had recognized a previous foul committed by the Argentinian himself. At 78-72 with 5” left in the match, coach Di Bella calls a timeout to attempt the very difficult comeback. Fabi scores, but it’s too late: at the “PalaTiziano” it ends 79-74.

There are three players in the Novipiù jersey who reach double figures: Fabi stops at 15, with excellent shooting percentages. Kelly, the Casalesi’s best scorer, reaches 21 while Pepper, with 19 points and 7 rebounds, is the player in the rossoblu jersey with the best rating (+17). MVP of the match was the American Ty Sabin with 27 points scored for the university players. The shooting percentages see Novipiù converting 40.3% of shots from the field (16/36 threes), Roma surpasses them with 44.6%. The rebounding fight ends 43-35 for the Capitoline players.

On Wednesday 6 December (8.30 pm) Novipiù will return to the field for the midweek round at the “PalaEnergica Paolo Ferraris” against league leaders Trapani Shark, then on Sunday 10 (6 pm) another important home match against Vigevano.
