Paula Pareto Chosen as Candidate for IOC Athletes Commission

The Olympic champion in Judo, Paula Pareto, was chosen as one of the candidates to join the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In total, 32 athletes (18 women and 14 men) will run for election to fill one of the four vacant places on the IOC Athletes’ Commission, which will be filled next year during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Four candidates from four different sports will be chosen by all the athletes competing in Paris 2024, who will be able to vote in the Olympic Village during the course of the Games.

The candidates, who were nominated by their respective National Olympic Committees along with their Athletes’ Commissions, come from 15 sports and 32 countries.

Paula Pareto is considered the best Argentine judoka and one of the best national athletes of all time, becoming the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal for Argentina, obtaining a privileged place among the legends of world sport.

“La Peque” participated in four Olympic Games in the category up to 48kg: in Beijing 2008 she won the bronze medal; In London 2012 she obtained the Olympic Diploma for her fifth place; She became Olympic champion in Rio 2016 and ended her successful sports career with a seventh place finish in Tokyo 2020.

Regarding the Pan American Games, Pareto won the bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro 2007, was champion in Guadalajara 2010, silver medalist in Toronto 2015 and fifth in Lima 2019.

A doctor by profession, the former judoka combined her two passions in Santiago 2023, sports and medicine, by joining the staff of the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) as part of its medical team.

At the South American level, Paula won the bronze medal in Buenos Aires 2006 and the gold medals in Medellín 2010 and Santiago 2014.

She became world champion in Astana 2015, was world runner-up in Russia 2014 and won a bronze medal at the Baku 2018 World Championships.

In the field of sports administration, Pareto is the vice president of the COA Athletes Commission and representative of the athletes on the institution’s Board of Directors, and she is also a member of the Athletes Commission of the International Judo Federation, since 2021.

About the IOC Athletes Commission

The four outgoing elected members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, who were elected at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and whose mandate will expire at the end of Paris 2024, are: Daniel Gyurta (Swimming, Hungary), Britta Heidemann (Fencing, Germany), Yelena Isinbaeva (Athletics, Russia) and Seung-min Ryu (Table Tennis, Republic of Korea).

Likewise, three designated members of the Commission will also finish their mandate in Paris: Sarah Walker (BMX, New Zealand), Nadin Dawani (Taekwondo, Jordan) and Aya Medany (Modern Pentathlon, Egypt).

The IOC Athletes’ Commission is made up of a maximum of 23 members (12 members directly elected by their peers and a maximum of 11 appointed), who serve for eight years. Its members participate directly in all decisions made by the governing body of the Olympic Movement. This is one of the main responsibilities of the Athletes’ Commission, along with supporting the development of athletes in their sporting and non-sporting careers, and serving as a liaison between athletes and the IOC.
