Paris Basketball Defeats ASVEL in Betclic ELITE Showdown

Betclic ELITE – Booed on Friday in its LDLC Arena against Valence in the Euroleague, ASVEL had to bounce back this Sunday against Paris Basketball. An opportunity to remain Monaco’s sole runner-up in the standings that Gianmarco Pozzecco’s players missed, overwhelmed by Parisian desire for its last outing in the championship at the Halle Carpentier (92-86).

Two vengeful teams met on Saturday on the floor of the Halle Carpentier, with 2nd place for Betclic ELITE at stake, behind Monaco. On the one hand, ASVEL had to bounce back after its heavy defeat in the Euroleague, while Paris Basketball, corrected by the Roca Team a week earlier, did not want to miss out on its second big test of the season. A match at the top won by the players from the capital (92-86), in control of a good part of the match, carried by a great Tyson Ward (20 points, 7 rebounds, 27 rating).

True to itself, Paris started at a frantic pace and quickly led 12-5 (3′) thanks to stolen balls (18 turnovers for Lyon-Villeurbanne, including 6 in the first quarter) and a nice 3-point address from Tyson Ward and Mikael Jantunen (7 points). The moment chosen by ASVEL, deprived of Nando De Colo, left to rest, to increase its intensity and impose its physical power in the racket. Youssoupha Fall (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Joffrey Lauvergne (13 points), authors of 9 points accumulated until then, had a field day in attack while Mbaye Ndiaye chained two successive counterattacks to calm the Parisian enthusiasm and bring the two teams back to level (12-12, 5 ‘).

Paris is in the lead

In the 2nd quarter, Tuomas Iisalo’s men went 11-2 in two minutes (33-26, 12′) in the wheel of a Collin Malcolm (12 points) lethal behind the arc (2 out of 2) to make a new gap. In a tough and physical encounter, the Parisians continued their effort and forced Gianmarco Pozzecco to take time out on a long distance arrow from Mehdy Ngouama (5 points) which gave the locals a 9-length lead (41-32, 16′). The Rhone residents continued to come under Parisian pressure and brought the gap back to 10 points before returning to the locker room with a final tap from Youssoupha Fall (57-47, 20′).

The residents of Halle Carpentier returned to the second half with the same desire. Aggressive and diligent in defense, the Parisians enjoyed fast play and stunned the Villeurbanne with a new lay-up from Nadir Hifi (67-51, 25′). In the wake of a Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot incisive (17 points), author of 7 points over the period, ASVEL did not give up and placed a 9-0 to come back seven lengths from its opponent two minutes from the end of the 3rd quarter, closed with the score from 74 to 63 (30′).

Nadir Hifi kills the match

Hit but not sunk, the Lyonnais attacked the final period like starving men. TLC, always him, Mike Scott, but above all Charles Kahudi, author of 8 points in a row, allowed the Rhone residents to return to equality (76-76, 33′). The two teams then surrendered blow for blow in front of a packed house completely committed to the Parisians, and the changes of leader followed one another. Villeurbanne took the lead one last time two minutes from time (83-84), before Nadir Hifi exploded the Halle Carpentier with two ballsy shots, and thus put Paris away for good.

After the slap received in Monaco, the Parisians struck a big blow this Sunday and confirmed that they were indeed among the leaders of the championship. Tuomas Iisalo enjoyed his players’ performance after the match and was delighted to have “beat a Euroleague level team”. A good omen before the high-risk trip of the Ile-de-France residents on Saturday to the floor of Bourg-en-Bresse, 4th in the standings with one victory less than the players from the capital.
