Nick Kyrgios would like to “not play anymore”

The Australian Nick Kyrgios would like to end his career immediately after losing his tennis year in 2023. “If it were up to me, I honestly wouldn’t want to play anymore,” the 2022 Wimbledon finalist said in a podcast hosted by British author Jay Shetty. The 28-year-old announced that he would still “play for one or two years, be at the top and stop according to my own ideas.”

Kyrgios canceled his start at the Australian Open next January last Saturday. Due to injury, the eccentric tennis star was only able to play one match this year. First a knee injury stopped him, then a torn wrist ligament.

“I’m exhausted, I’m tired. I’ve had three operations now,” said Kyrgios about the long period of suffering: “I’m only 28 years old, I always wanted a family and no pain. When I stand up, I can’t walk without pain.”

In the podcast, Kyrgios also spoke again about his depression, which even triggered suicidal thoughts in him in 2019. At a tournament in Mexico he “thought seriously about it” on the balcony of a hotel, said the former Australian Open doubles winner. He drank every night and caused himself pain. The reminder that he had fans behind him helped him solve his psychological problems.
