Nick Kyrgios confirmed that he will not participate in the Australian Open next month due to injuries that limited him to playing only one game in 2023.
The 28-year-old Australian player reported on social media that he will miss the Grand Slam for the second consecutive year and did not give a possible return date after a persistent wrist injury.
“Obviously I had a difficult year with injuries, knee surgery and a somewhat hasty return that delayed me, in addition to wrist problems. This time will be disappointing, and I will not be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open,” Kyrgios noted on his subscription site on the blue page, which he joined on Friday.
“It breaks my heart. I have incredible memories in this tournament and I just want to return to play at the highest level and for that I need a little more time,” he added.
Kyrgios, whose name was missing from the entry list, withdrew from last season’s Australian Open due to knee surgery.
Kyrgios was runner-up after losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in 20222, but played only one official singles match in 2023, a straight-sets loss on grass in Stuttgart.
Kyrgios teamed with Thanasi Kokkinakis to be crowned men’s doubles champions at the 2022 Australian Open.
