Newcastle’s Strategic Approach to Reinforcements: A Focus on the Saudi Connection

Newcastle are having a great season. The Magpies are still in the race to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League – they will however have to beat Milan and wait for poor results from PSG – and above all are having a good first part of the season in the Premier League. The team coached by Eddie Howe is in seventh place in the English championship standings, with one game less than many of the teams ranked ahead.

Contrary to what one might think, and even if there have still been significant investments like Alexander Isaak (€70 million) or Sandro Tonali (€70 million), Newcastle has not not do anything with the money of the PIF, the sovereign fund of Saudi Arabia. The club’s leaders notably focused on talents from the English championship, and recruited in a rather coherent and intelligent manner.

And this winter, Newcastle could well use their relationship with the Arab country to strengthen themselves. This is what explains Football Insider, who thus affirms that the Magpies intend to bring several players from the Saudi championship in January, mainly in the form of loan. And this, in particular because financial fair play is starting to catch up with Newcastle, which could therefore use loans to strengthen itself.

As a reminder, Newcastle has the same owners – the PIF – as the four Saudi leaders, namely Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli. Premier League laws would allow the Magpies to bring in players from these clubs without constraint.
