The management of the New York Yankees would be seeing their opportunities to land one of the brightest stars currently in the MLB diminished as negotiations with the San Diego Padres have stalled to reach an eventual trade for Juan Soto.

According to recent reports, the Yankees are “very far away” in talks with the Padres, who had sought some of the Bronx Bombers’ best players and prospects to hand over the Dominican outfielder’s contract.

San Diego would have sought a trade that included pitchers Michael King and Drew Thorpe (number 99 prospect in the Major Leagues, according to MLB Pipeline’s ranking), as well as five prospects from the organization, according to SNY’s Andy Martino.

The fee was considered by the Yankees management who would only have Juan Soto for one year and the possibilities of an extension are unclear. “There was no deal close” as of Friday night, said Martino, who also indicated that negotiations were focusing on pitchers Clarke Schmidt, Johny Brito, Randy Vasquez (the organization’s No. 14 prospect) and Thorpe.

However, the Padres would also have sought to acquire new shortstop Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Domínguez, players that the Yankees will not negotiate, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Blue Jays emerge as a dark horse by Juan Soto

One of the franchises that is making its way among the possible candidates to negotiate for Juan Soto are the Toronto Blue Jays, a club that has some pitchers available that could interest the Padres.

Although the Blue Jays would also be in the shortlist to sign superstar Shohei Ohtani, it is likely that this signing will not come to fruition, so the addition of Soto would be a big win.

The Blue Jays would be willing to part with Alek Manoah, Bowden Francis and Ricky Tiedemann (number 31 prospect in the entire MLB).
