NBA’s In-Season Tournament Courts: A Visual Makeover and Controversy

The customization of the courts by the NBA for its new tournament, the officially called In-Season Tournament, has forced the League to make a series of adjustments so that fans receive the best possible image.

There is one aspect that has been much talked about about this NBA Cup over the last month: the aggressive colors used for the special courts. Some like it and some don’t, but that’s how it is. The differentiation with different matches (which do count only for the regular season) has been a hallmark of this tournament to give it a veneer of novelty and freshness. All the teams except the Mavericks (in their case, due to a deficiency in the parquet prepared for it) have had their group stage matches played on courts with a striking patina. There is also one at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The change of location has meant that the NBA has made a decision that affects only the In-Season Tournament and one of the teams that is still in contention, the Lakers, but that has not been viewed favorably within its organization.

According to journalist Dave McMenamin (ESPN), the NBA has vetoed the Lakers’ black uniform (which they used in the quarterfinals) due to “concern about the visual contrast between the jerseys and the design of the specialized court.” He adds that, when asking one of the players on the squad, the response was that this is “bullshit.” It was precisely the outfit with which they qualified for this Final Four in Las Vegas, beating the Suns 106-103. Both in their duel against the Pelicans and in the final if they advance to it, they will have to wear another kit.
