Milos Raonic during his surprise appearance in Málaga

Even attentive observers of the tennis circuit don’t really understand Milos Raonic. Actually, almost no one had expected the Canadian to return to the ATP tour, then Raonic was suddenly there in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, winning a game there (against Miomir Kecmanovic) and a few days later in Wimbledon (against Dennis Novak).

In Toronto, Raonic was able to defeat Frances Tiafoe, a player from the world’s best, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Mackenzie McDonald. The last appearance at an event with ATP points was at the US Open, where Milos Raonic lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the start. And then the veteran actually pulled himself together to compete against Finland in the Davis Cup finals in Málaga (and win against Patrick Kaukovalta, then number 782 in the world).

Raonic wanted to start the 2024 season in Hong Kong. But with his rejection, the now 32-year-old has now had the honor of being the first player to be pulled out of a tournament in the current season. With his protected ranking of 33, Raonic would have had a fixed place in the table, which is led by Andrey Rublev.
