Michael van Gerwen Satisfied with Smooth Start at Darts World Cup

Michael van Gerwen is happy with his smooth start at the Darts World Cup, although the three-time world champion is not completely satisfied. He expected to achieve a higher average in his opening match against Keane Barry.

Van Gerwen allowed his Irish opponent in London’s Alexandra Palace only two games and won 3-0. He finished with an average of 98.17, compared to 95.81 for Barry.

“I got out of the starting blocks very well and started very sharp, but not quite as I wanted. I said last night: ‘I will definitely throw an average of over 100’,” Van Gerwen said in front of the camera of Viaplay.

The 34-year-old Dutchman did not reach that average. “Today my scoring ability let me down. I think that’s a shame. But you always have to keep setting goals for yourself.”

Still, Van Gerwen was happy with the 3-0 win. “Barry is a fantastic player when he gets his act together. Then you have to watch out for mistakes and do the right things at the right times. I did that.”

Van Gerwen plays in the third round against the Belgian Kim Huybrechts, the New Zealander Ben Robb or fellow countryman Richard Veenstra. Robb and Veenstra will meet each other in the opening round, after which the winner will face Huybrechts.
