Memphis Depay’s Disappointing Return to Starting Line-Up Ends in Red Card

Memphis Depay only played 40 minutes in his first starting spot in months on Tuesday. The recovered attacker was killed before halftime against Getafe after a red card from teammate Stefan Savic.

Memphis was in the starting line-up for Atlético Madrid against Getafe for the first time since August 28. At the time, the Dutch international suffered an injury and his fitness was struggling. In recent months, Memphis mainly sat in the stands or on the bench.

Memphis was finally allowed to show itself from the start again in front of its own audience, but it still ended in a deception. After just 40 minutes, Memphis had to leave in disappointment, because Diego Simeone wanted to bring in an extra defender after a red card from Savic.

Memphis has only been in Atlético Madrid’s starting line-up three times since the start of this season. He also missed all European Championship qualifiers after the summer with the Dutch national team. His last international match dates back to March, when he helped the Dutch team with one goal and a 3-0 win over Gibraltar.

Without Memphis and shorthanded, Atlético ultimately ended up with a draw. The Madrilenians still reached 3-1 thanks to, among other things, two goals from Antoine Griezmann, who equaled the club’s top scorer and the former Spanish national coach Luis Aragonés (both 173 goals). But Getafe still made it 3-3. The equalizer came in injury time.
