Max Verstappen’s First World Title: The Truth Behind the Famous Board Radio Revealed

Max Verstappen won his first world title two years ago and in the ecstasy just after the race we of course heard a lot of shouting and cheering on the board radio. For years it was assumed that it was Alex Albon who recorded the first famous board radio, but Gianpiero Lambiase has now dispelled that.

In 2021 it was finally Verstappen’s turn, who had been driving in Formula 1 since 2015 to fulfill his dream: becoming world champion. After a nerve-wracking season, it seemed to be Hamilton who saw his dream come true and seemed to win his eighth world title. However, after a long year, things went wrong again during the dramatic last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. After the bizarre final phase, Verstappen managed to overtake his British competitor in the last lap, did not let him pass and took his first world title of his career.

Not Albon

The ecstasy afterwards was of course enormous and that could also be heard on the first board radio: “Oh my lord, Max!”, were the famous shouted words towards Verstappen that we heard at the time, while the Dutchman also shouted out. Due to the recognizable voice, it was long assumed that it was Albon – then the team’s reserve and test driver – who we heard on the radio. However, Lambiase has now dispelled that rumor. It was he himself who let himself go like this: “I think it’s fair to say that I am very calm, collected and rational in a lot of my radio messages and communications with Max. But I have to admit that it was me who then was shouting on the radio. It wasn’t Albon,” he concludes, laughing.
