Mauro Nespoli Narrowly Misses Podium in World Cup Paris Event

Mauro Nespoli stops at the foot of the podium in the fourth round of the World Cup in Paris. In the finals played at the Esplanade des Invalides, venue of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic finals, despite an excellent performance with excellent average points, the Italian was overcome in the semi-final in a comeback by Kim Woojin (6-4) and then lost the bronze with the Brazilian Marcus D’Almeida who earned the podium after the play-off 6-5 (10-9).

A top-level performance by Mauro Nespoli was not enough to earn the podium in the fourth stage of the World Cup in Paris. The matches played at the Esplanade des Invalides in the French capital, site of the Olympic and Paralympic finals in 2024, saw the Air Force Olympian play the semi-final and final for the third place, putting only arrows on 10 and 9 on the target, with only one 8 under his belt. Despite this regularity, Nespoli remains at the foot of the podium, beaten in the semi-final by Kim Woojin (Kor) 6-4 and then in the final by Marcus D’Almeida (Bra) 6-5 in the play-off (10-9), but he can console himself with the fact who, in addition to having confirmed himself among the best in the world, having won the last cup stage in Medellin (Col), is already qualified for the circuit final which will be held in Hermosillo, Mexico, on 9 and 10 September.

NESPOLI’S CHALLENGES

Both matches played by Nespoli today were spectacular. The semi-final against Kim Woojin sees him leading 3-1 after the first two sets (29-28, 28-28). The third set, like the second, ends in a draw (28-28) and, once it reaches 4-2, the Italian is unable to deliver the knockout blow to the South Korean, who brings the match to 4-4 thanks at a partial score of 29-28. In the fifth set Kim Woojin manages to reiterate the 29 points, while Nespoli closes with a 28 which gives the 4-6 and the victory to the opponent.

Mauro Nespoli immediately returned to the field to compete for the bronze with world no. 1 Marcus D’Almeida, who had lost the semi-final against the South Korean Lee Woo Seok 2-6. Nespoli starts with the turbo, scoring a 30-28 which makes it 2-0 and then equalizes the second half (29-29) taking it to 3-1. D’Almeida, however, manages to get to 3-3 in the only volley in which Nespoli hits the 8 (26-28 partial) and in the fourth set the South American overtakes him who goes to 5-3 thanks to the partial of 30- 29. The blue, however, does not give up and takes the match to a play-off by winning the fifth quarter 30-26. The shoot-off, however, rewards D’Almeida, who wins the bronze 6-5 by placing his arrow on 10, while Nespoli responds with a 9.

The match for the gold was then won by Kim Woojin who closed the challenge on his national teammate Lee Woo Seok (who had beaten D’Almeida in the semi-final 6-2) with a clear 6-0.

THE OTHER FINALS

The women’s recurve podium saw the American Casey Kaufhold on the top step, beating the home athlete Lisa Barbelin (Fra) 6-4. Bronze for South Korea’s Choi Misun who beat China’s Hai Ligan 7-3.

In the team finals it was a triple challenge between South Korea and Taipei. And all the matches saw the victory of the Korean masters. In the men’s game with a clear 6-0, in the women’s the match ended 6-2 and in the mixed team 5-3. The match for the mixed bronze was instead won by China, which beat Mexico 6-2.
