Mattéo Guendouzi: Filling the Void Left by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Mattéo Guendouzi has a heavy responsibility: to fill the absence of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. After eight seasons at Lazio, the Serbian, one of the best midfielders in Serie A, signed for Al-Hilal, in Saudi Arabia, during the summer. The Laziale management drew a juicy check for €40 million and reinvested almost half of it to recruit the Frenchman, in the form of a loan with a compulsory purchase option of €13 million (and a €5 million bonus) to be paid to OM. “He really wanted Lazio, especially because he knew the coach,” says Angelo Fabiani, Lazio sporting director. Guendouzi and Maurizio Sarri, his coach, have only crossed paths, in the Premier League or during the 2019 Europa League final, when the first played for Arsenal and the second coached Chelsea. Sarri had been marked by Guendouzi’s boundless energy.
