Malaysian Coach Wants to Follow in the Footsteps of Shin Tae-yong and Park Hang-seo

KOMPAS.com – Malaysian national team coach, Kim Pan-gon, responded to the phenomenon of South Korean tactics in Southeast Asia.

Kim Pan-gon is also proud of Park Hang-seo’s success in Vietnam and the good results achieved by Shin Tae-yong with the Indonesian national team.

“The Korean coach is now very popular in Southeast Asia and has been recognized for his ability to get results,” said Kim Pan-gon, quoted from the FIFA website, Saturday (30/12/2023).

“I am very proud of what Park Hang-seo has done with the Vietnam national team and Shin Tae-yong with Indonesia,” he added.

Kim Pan-gon is determined to follow in the footsteps of Park Hang-seo and Shin Tae-yong by providing results for the Malaysian national team.

With this, Kim Pan-gon hopes to pave the way for other Korean coaches to have the opportunity to train in other countries.

“Even though I work in Malaysia, I am proud to be a coach representing South Korea. You must have a mission to get good results and pave the way for others,” he said.

“Now, because Korean coaches are doing this in Southeast Asia, I want to see my colleagues get the opportunity to work in countries where the level of football and competition is higher,” said Kim Pan-gon.

While leading the Vietnam national team in 2017-2023, Park Hang-seo brought the Golden Star team to several championship podiums.

Park Hang-seo led Vietnam to become champions of the 2018 AFF Cup and presented two SEA Games gold medals in 2019 and 2021.

Meanwhile, Shin Tae-yong helped boost the Indonesian national team’s FIFA ranking. He also became the first coach to qualify the U20, U23 and senior national teams for the Asian Cup.

Like Shin Tae-yong, Kim Pan-gon also helped improve the Malaysian national team’s FIFA ranking and qualify Harimau Malaya for the 2023 Asian Cup.

In fact, Kim Pan-gon succeeded in bringing Malaysia to two consecutive wins in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asia Zone.

Malaysia won 4-3 over Kyrgyzstan after trailing 1-3, then narrowly won 1-0 over Taiwan.

These results make Malaysia now leading the 2026 World Cup Qualification Group D standings in the Asia Zone, ahead of Oman, Kyrgyztan and Taiwan.

Kim Pan-gon and Shin Tae-yong are currently preparing their respective teams ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar on January 12-February 10 2024.
