Liverpool take provisional lead after victory over Burnley

The Reds beat Burnley this Tuesday (2-0) and are once again leaders of the championship.

Liverpool took the lead in the Premier League by beating promoted and penultimate Burnley 2-0 on Tuesday, and put pressure on Arsenal who could however reclaim the throne on Thursday in the event of a victory against West Ham.

The Reds resumed their march forward after dropping points against Manchester United (0-0) and Arsenal (1-1) during the previous two days. They now have 42 units, two more than Arsenal, host of the Hammers on Thursday at the end of the 19th day, and three more than third Aston Villa, traveling to Manchester United on Tuesday evening.

The victory was launched by Darwin Nunez (6th) and sealed by Diogo Jota (90th), who came on in place of the Uruguayan six minutes earlier, for his first appearance after a month of absence due to injury.

Nunez left behind a run of twelve matches without scoring with the Reds in all competitions. You have to go back to November 1 to find any trace of his previous league goal.

Liverpool thought they would double the lead thanks to Harvey Elliott (57th) but the young English midfielder’s goal was invalidated due to an offside by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian shot over the top of the crossbar (34th) in this one-sided match, which ended without a single shot on target for Burnley.
