Lisa Grabner Wins Third Bronze at U23 European Championships in Potsdam

When it matters, Lisa Grabner is there. After a four-month break, the 22-year-old won her third bronze at European Championship level. At the U23 European Championships in Potsdam (Germany), the JC Wimpassing fighter fought for the longed-for place on the podium in the class up to 57 kilograms. Grabner was already one of the favorites in advance after she recently won silver at the World Cup in Sarajevo, Bosnia. “I woke up with the feeling that today I’m going to tear the world down,” the HSZ Seebenstein athlete went into the competition with a lot of self-confidence.

Only lost against the eventual European champions

Elin Henninger from the Netherlands, who was third in the U18 World Championships, had an equal opponent waiting in the semi-finals. The Austrian also sought the decision herself in this fight and took the lead with Waza-ari in the first minute of the fight. However, the Dutchwoman was able to equalize the lead and prevail with an armbar extension. Henninger then secured the European championship title. Grabner met Daniela Tcaci (Republic of Moldova) in the fight for bronze. In this fight, the Wimpassinger woman clearly prevailed – and was extremely proud of the precious metal.

Jury sees Hammarberg at the top

The medal was “really cool, especially because I was injured for four months this year, first on my finger, then on my knee – including surgery,” beams Grabner. The expert jury also appreciated her performance in the young athlete of the month competition. The experts put Lisa Grabner in second place behind the “beach giant” Timo Hammarberg. The tall man from Wien Neustadt made people sit up and take notice with silver at the U21 World Championships in Thailand. It was only in a hard-fought final that Hammarberg and his Viennese partner Tim Berger had to admit defeat to the Belgians Van Longedonck/Vercauteren.

Beierl as number one on the internet

Of course, the ranking by the jury is only (a little more) than half the battle. Two thirds of the expert decision is included in the overall result, one third is contributed by the voting on nön.at. There Henning Beierl was in the fast lane. The 15-year-old Himberg bobsleigh athlete took fifth place in the Junior World Cup and qualified for the Youth Olympics. The “Bob gene” runs in the family: Henning is the younger brother of women’s overall World Cup winner Katrin Beierl.

A duo in the fast lane

In the online vote, Henning Beierl received by far the most votes, followed by judoka Lisa Grabner. Because Timo Hammarberg came away empty-handed in the voting concert, he was overtaken. And the European Championship third place from Wimpassing was happy about first place. Beierl moved up to second place – shared with Hammarberg.
