“What does sports mean to you?”

This year will be a special year for sports in Saga Prefecture. “Let’s talk about sports SAGA 2024,” a project to coincide with the National Sports Festival and National Sports Festival for People with Disabilities held in Saga, considers how sports should be through interviews with five athletes and experts.

The first one was Kaoru Yamaguchi (59), a judoka and professor at the University of Tsukuba. Her accomplishments during her active days are etched in the memories of the people of the prefecture, and her insightful opinions regarding the Tokyo Olympics, which were shaken by the coronavirus pandemic, were also memorable.

Now let’s talk about sports.

Major League Baseball player Shohei Otani’s transfer to the Dodgers for the highest price in sports history, Samurai Japan’s WBC championship, and the performance of the Japanese men’s basketball national team that qualified for the Olympics… Yamaguchi narrows his eyes at the news from the sports world that filled the pages last year.

“While there is a lot of dark news in politics and other areas, sports are doing their best. It’s good to be moved and encouraged by what you see. However, that’s not what sports are all about.”
