L’Équipe links Varane to a surprising new club

Raphaël Varane is open to a return to RC Lens, L’Équipe reveals. The Frenchman has fallen out of favor at Manchester United and can return to his native country at the club where he made his professional debut in 2010. However, Bayern Munich is still in the market for the centre-back.
The tug-of-war for Varane’s signature has been going on for some time. The man is not satisfied with his chances under Erik ten Hag and hints at a winter break. Foreign clubs are lining up to (temporarily) take over the French defender from United.
After Real Madrid and Bayern Munich already expressly reported, RC Lens now also appears to be on the market. Varane made his first steps in professional football with the current number seven of the Ligue 1. He himself would like to return.
“I will end my career in Madrid, Manchester or Lens,” Varane said in March. “I won’t stop at another club. Madrid seems complicated to me. Players usually don’t go there. The most likely thing I think is that I will end my career in Manchester or Lens.”
Varane played 24 official games for Lens in the 2010/11 season, before Zinedine Zidane urged Real Madrid club management to sign his compatriot for ten million euros. Varane played in the youth of Lens with, among others, Thorgan Hazard and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
Lens coach Franck Haise recently commented on a possible return of Varane. “If Varane wants to return, we will welcome him with open arms,” the 52-year-old coach said. “But the contract will be complicated. I read that it would be complicated for Bayern to pay his salary. If it is complicated for them…”
Varane was brought to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 with sky-high expectations. The French man receives around 20 million euros annually from United, but has only played 825 minutes this season. On Boxing Day he played ninety minutes against Aston Villa (3-2 win).
