Latvian Luge Team Achieves Success in World Cup Races at Whistler

Bott/Plüme achieved a result of 37.872 seconds in the only sprint race, which allowed the winners to beat the Austrian crew of Thomas Steu/Wolfgang Kindl by five thousandths of a second. The third place winners from Germany, Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlts, were 0.147 seconds behind the Latvians.

After two races, Bots/Plüme are second in the overall standings of the World Cup behind Šteu/Kindle.

In the men’s sprint, Kristers Aparjod took 6th place, finishing after 33.718 seconds, but the winner was German Max Langenhan with a result of 33.257 seconds. Aparjodu was 0.123 seconds apart from the top three.

Viktorija Ziediņa/Selīna Zvilna and Anda Upīte/Sanija Ozoliņa took 7th and 8th place respectively in the women’s doubles sprint. The Austrians Selina Egle/Lara Michaela Kip were the fastest.

Later on Saturday, Kendija Aparjode reached 7th place in women’s sprint, while Elīna Ieva Vītola and Sigita Bērziņa shared 12th and 13th place, respectively. The winner was the German Julia Taubica.

The 15 fastest participants in each discipline qualified for the sprint. In sprint races, the timing does not start at the starting ramp, but later on the track. In the sprint race, the lugers can secure the same number of points in the overall standings as in the main competition.

Earlier on Saturday, in the women’s main competition, Aparjode reached 9th place, immediately leaving Vitola and Bērzina behind her, while Franceska Bona ranked 21st.

Austrian Madeleina Egle won, followed by German Julia Taubitz and US luger Summer Britcher in the top three.

In the first race, Vitola was eighth, Aparjode shared the 9th position, while Bērziņa and Bona reached 12th and 20th place, respectively.

It has already been announced that on Friday the best result in the Latvian team was achieved by the men’s double team Bots/Plūme, taking 4th place. Kristers Aparjods finished sixth in the men’s competition, while Anda Upīte/Sanija Ozoliņa finished seventh in the women’s doubles.

The second round at Whistler in Canada is scheduled for next weekend before Christmas. The World Cup calendar includes nine stages, and the last two stages are scheduled in Sigulda with the end of the season on March 3.
