Kira Weidle messes up Super G in St. Moritz: “Screwed up ride”

Ski racer Kira Weidle badly botched the first speed event of the Alpine World Cup season. The Starnberg woman only finished 26th in the Super-G in St. Moritz on Friday. The Italian Sofia Goggia won after a fantastic ride with almost a second lead over the second-placed Austrian Cornelia Hütter. The Swiss Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami came third.

“It was a messed up trip from top to bottom,” Weidle told ARD. Her performance was “very, very disappointing”. The 27-year-old took to the slopes with start number 1. Maybe it wouldn’t have hurt to see a few other drivers beforehand, she said.

“A day to forget”

She didn’t make one or two transitions well. But it was mainly her fault that she wasn’t able to show what she could do. Weidle’s teammate Emma Aicher retired, Katrin Hirtl-Stanggaßinger finished 36th.

There is a departure in Switzerland on Saturday (10.30 a.m./ARD and Eurosport). Weidle wants to attack again and, if possible, do it like last year. At that time she came 24th in the first descent from St. Moritz and third just a day later. “Today was a day to forget, tomorrow it starts again,” said the 2021 World Cup runner-up.

The races in St. Moritz are the first speed competitions of this winter. It was not possible to ski on the Matterhorn due to the weather. The men’s World Cup in Beaver Creek in the USA was also canceled.
